Types of Cockroaches
German Cockroach
They are omnivores and scavenger. They like starch, sugary foods, grease and meats. In certain situations where there is a shortage of foodstuffs, they will even turn cannibalistic, often chewing on the wings and legs of each other or eat household items such as soap, glue and toothpaste. This cockroach can be seen in the day occasionally, especially if there is a large population or if they have been disturbed. However, sightings are most commonly reported in the evening hours as they are nocturnal and therefore most active at night.
One female could produce up to 35,000 offspring in one year. They usually nest in wall voids, cracks and crevices for they prefer dark places. This roach very commonly can cause a severe infestation if not treated properly. Sprays very seldom control these roaches. The best advice is to never use sprays, the best solution is to bait them.
American Cockroach
They are the larger reddish-brown cockroaches, which usually forges from the outside. They average around an inch and a half in length and some species have wings. In residential areas, these cockroaches live in basements and sewers and may move outdoors into yards during warm weather. These cockroaches are common in basements, crawl spaces, cracks and crevices of porches, foundations, and walkways adjacent to buildings. They feed on a wide variety of plant and animal material.
Oriental Cockroach
The Oriental cockroach tends to travel somewhat more slowly than other species. They are often called water bugs since they prefer dark, moist places. The total length of this roach can be 1.25 inches. They have wings but can not fly. The adults are very dark brown or nearly black. They can often be found around decaying organic matter, and in sewers, drains, damp basements, porches, and other damp locations. They can be found outside in bushes, under leaf groundcover, under mulch, and around other damp places outdoors. Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal. Oriental cockroaches can be elusive in that a casual inspection of an infested dwelling during the day may show no signs of roach activity.
Asian
Asian roach is most common and they are similar to the German roach but are different in behaviour. They prefer to infest shaded and moist areas in the landscape, grassy areas and ground covers. and typically become most active just at dusk. Adults will fly quite readily and for long distances. They also are known to fly to lights at night. So Bright lights should be eliminated with possible yellow lights as a control measure.
Life Cycle Of Cockroach
Cockroaches have incomplete metamorphosis. Most species of cockroaches lay eggs in an ootheca (egg case) that is either deposited on or under a suitable substrate or carried attached to the genital region. The egg stage lasts from a few weeks to a few months. The young are active from hatching and resemble the adults but are usually lighter in colour and black wings. The young cockroaches develop through several nymphal instars, which may range from 2 to 12 depending on the species and may take from a month Control Now or so up to 12 months to reach maturity. Some species may live for several years.
